They wanted to climb up to the summit – rapidly. The straight path was long and arduous.
The Satan offered his service. “Mortgage one vertebra. I will take you to the next stage through a short cut.”
What is there in a vertebra? They thought, we can then follow the straight path.
The first vertebra was mortgaged. Wow, the rise was really rapid!
They felt happy. The slippery slope smiled.
The story repeated, my dear readers, every year. They kept climbing up. Looking down upon those with rectitude, trying to climbing the hard way up.
We will show our uprightness when we reach the summit – they said.
The closer they went to the summit, the lesser remained the vertebrae in their spine.
When summit came – they were rendered invertebrates.
The Satan had the last laugh.
Moral: A short cut is the longest distance between the two points.
